Ever wonder why a baby’s skin is so amazingly soft? It’s because all of us are born with very high levels of an important acid known as Hyaluronic Acid or HA. And like everything else we lose in aging, our levels of hyaluronic acid declines most significantly after 40.
While it may not seem like a sexy ingredient nor does it get a lot of attention, this amazing substance has a bearing on our health in many ways and gaining more recognition for doing so especially in cosmetics.
Hyaluronic acid is extremely good for the skin. The name ‘acid’ might lead you to believe it’s a harsh substance or caustic to the skin but that’s not true at all. It’s a powerful humectant or moisture-binding ingredient that is responsible for plump, hydrate d and younger looking skin!
HA occurs naturally throughout the body in many places. In large amounts, it is present in between skin cells where it delivers moisture, firmness and suppleness to the skin. As skin ages, itis possible tp regenerate the skin’s hyaluronic acid content which produces a younger and fresher looking skin
This can be accomplished through hyaluronic acid fillers such as Restylane injected by a plastic surgeon or dermatologist directly into the wrinkle areas of the skin causing skin. In response, the skin “plumps” filling in fine lines and wrinkles. There are many recent clinical studies that attest to HA helping in wound healing and improving appearance of new and old scars alike.
Indentations in the skin from acne and other scarring can benefit from the qualities of HA. While injections are not long lasting because HA will become absorbed by the body, benefits from HA injections will last about 7 – 9 months.
Other ways to plump the skin is by combining a serum or moisturizer with HA. The results may not be as instant as filler injections but hyaluronic acid in serums will produce a softer, hydrated and nourished skin.
HA is one ingredient that is good for all skin types even oily. When HA is applied topically, skin elasticity improves, free radical damage can reverse and it may have benefit in protecting from UV rays.
Consider trying those two!
